What Is an AI Agent?

An AI agent is a system that can autonomously plan, make decisions, and perform tasks on your behalf to achieve a specific goal.

Unlike traditional AI tools that simply answer questions, AI agents go a step further—they execute tasks. These tasks can include:

For example, if you say:

“Book a meeting and remind me to follow up,”

An AI agent can handle the entire process; scheduling the meeting, drafting the email, and setting the reminder without further input.

The Three Core Components of an AI Agent

Every AI agent is built on three essential components:

1. Models — The Brain

Models are responsible for understanding context, reasoning through problems, and making decisions. They enable the agent to interpret your request and determine the best course of action.

2. Instructions — The Rules and Goals

Instructions define what the agent should do and how it should behave. They act as guardrails, ensuring that the agent’s actions remain aligned with the intended objective.

3. Tools — The Action Layer

Tools allow the agent to interact with the real world. These can include:

How AI Agents Work

AI agents operate in a continuous loop:

Understand → Decide → Act → Learn

This loop enables AI agents to act proactively rather than waiting for step-by-step instructions like traditional chatbots.

Built-In Guardrails and Control

AI agents follow clearly defined rules and constraints to ensure:

They exit their workflow when:

Why AI Agents Matter

AI agents bring significant advantages, especially in business and productivity contexts:
